Gender Inclusive Financing for Scaling up Improved Fish Processing Technologies in Malawi Project brief October 2018 to September 2019 Project Summary The project aims at addressing gender inequalities in the fish value chain by designing and promoting an innovative business model that can be used to scale-out adoption of improved fish processing technologies (IFPTs) among men, women, and the youth. The business model is comprised of a gender inclusive financing mechanism, the improved fish processing technologies (IFPTs) and their supply chains, and marketing of the products from the IFPTs including their certification by the Malawi Bureau of Standards. The financing product together with other elements such as marketing, capacity building initiatives, gender transformative approaches, and certification of fish products by the Malawi Bureau of Standards defines Research country the business model that is being promoted as a package to promote Malawi adoption of IFPTs. Donor University of Malawi : Chancellor To date, the project has successfully developed the innovative gender- College sensitive financing mechanism, and negotiations have been conducted with the bank to define the attributes of the gender inclusive financing Project duration mechanism suitable for fishing communities. 2018 – 2020 The scaling strategy has been developed based on a combination of Budget gender, communication and scaling strategies. Consultative meetings USD 0.069 million with various stakeholders and community members were made in the development of the Scaling Strategy. The strategy will promote scaling Partners of improved technologies as a package.  Malawi Department of Fisheries The project developed also the standards for fish dried products for  FDH Bank Limited three small pelagic fish species of Lake Malawi. A draft on fish standard for dried small fish has been submitted with positive response from the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS). In addition, MBS has requested the project to review other fish standards.
