Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the five-year Aquaculture for Income and Nutrition (AIN) project improved income and nutrition for thousands of Bangladeshis. AIN aimed to increase aquaculture productivity by developing hatcheries and nurseries, disseminating improved fish and shrimp seed, enhancing farm management skills of smallholder farmers, promoting new technologies to expand commercial aquaculture, developing backward and forward market linkages, supporting policy reform and building capacity of the public and private sectors resulting in increased farmers' productivity and revenue. Increased productivity at the household level was anticipated to result in more food for consumption and more produce for sale. This would contribute to further adoption of these improved technologies and management practices, and would result in an overall increase in rural households' income, thereby sustainably reducing poverty.
