This story describes the service provision model introduced by WorldFish through the Improving Food Security and Livelihoods project. The model focuses on local service providers (LSP) and service provider associations (SPAs), which act as a bridge between poor producers, private sector entities and government agencies. SPAs help the poor to enter and benefit from markets. Each LSP organizes input and output market support for around ten groups of 20–25 farming households. Thus, SPAs help producers to form micro and small enterprises (MSEs) to improve their linkages with the private sector. Farmers benefit because they are able to access, for example, technical knowledge, finance, advanced farming practices and higher quality inputs at lower cost as well as after-sales services from the LSPs. The private sector benefits because it gets access to door-to-door selling through LSPs. The LSPs benefit because they get a commission from both input and output market actors. Lastly, the government benefits because the model fulfils their mandate to help smallholder farmers. This publication describes the model from the perspective of fish farmers, community members, government representatives, NGOs, project staff and other relevant actors.
