A discussion is presented on the potential for integrated rice-fish culture systems in West Bengal as a means of not only increasing animal protein production but also of generating income for rural residents. Surveys indicate that although considerable knowledge on rice production is common among farmers, there is a lack of systematic knowledge on fish farming, suggesting the need for more appropriate extension activities and development projects.
