Aquafeed production in Africa, and future prospects for fishmeal and fish oil

Abstract
- Fish farming is growing faster (10% per year) in Africa than any other continents. Fish feed plays a major role in the production cycle, as it is one of the determinants of profitability. The available fish feeds in many African countries are expensive and not always of good quality. Further growth in the fish farming sector in Africa will require continued availability of quality feeds. Given that the quality of the feed depends on the quality of the ingredients used, the formulation and the processing of the diets, one could ask the following questions: what are the available ingredients in Africa? What role would marine ingredients continue to play in support of the growing fish farming industry in Africa?
