In April 2001, a planning workshop was held in Egypt to develop the WorldFish Center's (WFC) regional strategy for Africa and West Africa for the period 2002-2006. The objectives, expected outputs, and anticipated development impacts of the WFC's plans for the following aquatic production systems are outlined: (1) rivers and flood plains; (2) lakes and reservoirs; (3) coastal fisheries; and (4) aquaculture. In addition, a number of overarching policy studies and capacity-building activities are described. A schedule for the prioritization and initiation of the various activities is included. The programme will be co-ordinated from the WFC regional research centre in Egypt, from the WFC offices in Malawi and Cameroon, and by national and regional partners.
