dc.description.abstractA brief account is given of the life history of hilsa (Hilsa ilisha ), the national fish of Bangladesh. The production ofthis fish is approximately equals 30% of the total fish production of the country; the hilsa fishery is mainly confined to the artisanal sector, with traditional non-mechanized and mechanized boats in the inland and sea water, respectively. Management of the fishery is also discussed briefly.
