The current tilapia species identification relies on the use of characteristics to each species, however, is not accurate or reliable due to several factors including morphological variation and plasticity among local populations. In the countries surrounding the Lake Victoria, more than 30 species of Oreochromis have been described, many of which can readily hybridise and risk misidentification. To overcome this challenge, a SNP tool has been developed to enable more accurate and cost-effective identification of tilapias in Lake Victoria and its surrounding basin.
