WorldFish is mainly promoting the nutrition sensitive aquaculture and fisheries including horticulture on the pond dyke, available homestead and surrounding lands to the Suchana beneficiary households. It comprises nutrition sensitive aquaculture and fisheries interventions along with the coverage of half (50%) of the beneficiary households for vegetable gardening to improve nutrition status of women of reproductive ages and children less than two years in Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts. WorldFish is committed to contribute through increasing production, consumption and income under HFP and IGA support of nutritious fish and vegetables using homestead ponds, land and through utilizing public and private water bodies/wetland potentials. Considering the topography, agro-ecological and social contexts of the targeted areas, different technologies have been adopted to promote the nutrition sensitive fish farming in the ponds, captured from accessible open water including fish drying and vegetable cultivation at the pond dykes along with homestead and surrounding lands. Entire these interventions are also addressing the climate resilient and adaptation techniques and practices. WorldFish is also emphasizing the access to nutrition specific activities from other consortium teams towards promoting the diversified diets.
Out of targeted 14 main field activities for the reporting quarter, 12 have been achieved started successfully within the pandemic situations of COVID 19 before declaration of the current shut-down by the Government of Bangladesh. In addition to targeted 12, other 2 have also been achieved partially considering the local potentialities. Out of twelve, 10 activities have been achieved 97% to 601%; and 2 activities have achieved 28% to 43%. Initiatives are being continued to achieve the remaining field activities after improving the current situations of COVID 19. However, 46 Demo-pond operators, 11 IGA-BHHs and 446 BHHs have received direct interventions on value added activities for different types of demonstrations, and re-enforcing their regular activities especially those faced damages during last flood. Special demonstrations have been started to establish 15 high value fish farming (like Shing, Koi and Gulsha), 12 ‘two-cycle innovative tilapia production system’ using hapa and cages, and 19 Carp-Tilapia-Mola poly-culture focusing improved practices. Entire these beneficiary households have received formal training or short orientations before starting the interventions; then they received lime, fish fingerling, fish feed and some other materials based on targeted activities or demonstrations. DoF officials from divisional, district and upazila levels are providing technical supports at different stages of these activities.
A total 11 IGA-Aquaculture BHHs have received support towards developing the business case models and 10 BHHs have received high quality fish fry of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) to produce mixed sex fingerling using hapas and cages for their own use and selling to their neighboring households. A total 436 flood-affected beneficiary households received special input support for re-stocking fingerling at their ponds. Out of 436 beneficiary households, 418 were from HFP-pond beneficiary households and 18 were from Demo-pond beneficiary households. Considering the local potentiality and seasonal convenience, the inputs have been started to distribute ahead; although, it was not targeted for the reporting quarter.
Besides the direct interventions to the Suchana beneficiary households, a total 7 nursery operators have received the spawn of genetically improved rohu (Labeo rohita) from Carp Genetic Improvement program of WorldFish Jashore within the challenging situations of COVID 19. A total 10 kg of rohu spawn has been distributed to the 7 nurseries. It is expected that more than 20 lac rohu fingerlings will be produced from that 10 kg spawn, and more than 10,000 households can be benefited from those. During reporting quarter, a total 43 nursery operators have received refresher training on improved fingerling production technologies in two batches.
A total 7 linkage events were organized where 71 patilwalas/ fry hawkers attended with genetically improved carp nurseries as these patilwalas are the front-liners to promote the fish fingerlings to the grow-out farmers. Other 9 linkage events were organized at the 9 hapa nursing points to develop better business relationships between local patilwalas and nursery operators those are producing fingerling of high quality genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT). Accordingly, a total 29 patilwalas participated at those events.
During the reporting quarter, total 20 quarterly co-ordination meetings and total 13 joint monitoring visits were conducted with the officials of the Department of Fisheries (DoF). It is expected that these kinds of events will enhance the linkages between DoF personnel and beneficiary households; and DoF officials are also playing important role to disseminate the experience and techniques widely to other communities.
Within the reporting quarter, 3,605 neighboring households including male counterpart visited demo pond operators of phase 3 and phase 4 as the community resource centers; and received updated technical information on improved fish production practices. Out of 3,605 households, 2,435 were from Suchana BHHs and 1,170 were from Non-Suchana households.
