dc.description.abstractThe mechanisms used by physiologists and fishery biologists to explain why fish become mature are shown to be wanting. The hypothesis is presented that diminishing oxygen supply per unit weight serves in growing fish as the master factor in inducing the transition from juvenile to adult.
