The aquaculture sector in Egypt plays a vital role in ensuring food security, generating income, and supporting rural livelihoods. The fishery sector contributing to 38% of the total animal protein consumed in Egypt, aquaculture accounts for approximately 79% of the country’s total domestic fish supply. Despite this impressive growth during the last two decades, the sector faces numerous challenges that threaten it’s sustainability. The limited resources, such as land and water, are coupled with adverse climate impacts. In response to the needs, challenges, and opportunities within the Egyptian aquaculture value chain, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Cairo in collaboration with WorldFish, is implementing the Center of Renewable Energy in Aquaculture (CeREA) project. This innovative 4-year initiative, which started in June 2023, aims to enhance aquaculture practices in Egypt and across broader Africa by harnessing cutting-edge renewable energy technologies to support sustainable, climate-resilient aquaculture.
